Grace, mercy and
peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
Our text today is from the Old Testament Lesson just read, especially
these words, “A threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Thus far our text.
Dear friends in
Christ, especially Brittney and Chuck. Today,
two people become one flesh. Two people
become united until death do us part.
Beginning today, Brittney and Chuck, not matter what you face in your
lives, you face it together.
And we know that
as you go forth in your life from now you, you will truly face a lot of
different things. You will face
countless struggles. You will face pains
and difficulties. You will argue with
each other about varieties of different issues.
You will face countless struggles.
You will lose loved ones, you will have disagreements over jobs and
finances. Things in this life will not
be easy for you.
But as you go
forward, you go together. God has gifted
you to each other. Chuck you are a gift
from God to Brittney. And Brittney you
are a gift from God to Chuck. He joins
you together today so that you may face these issues not alone, but together. As our text says, “Two are better than one,
because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.”
The two are one,
beginning today. Chuck Kaiser and
Brittney German are now, “Chuck and Brittney”.
Two better than one. And yet,
even with this sure promise, the sinful world will still try to separate you. The world will still try to tear you apart
from one another. It will seek to
destroy your oneness, and to turn you against each other.
We know this is
the case. We look at our world and see a
world that is constantly attacking marriage.
Divorce rates climb, marriage rates fall, and families are no longer the
basic unit of society. How are you two
going to be able to withstand the flood against you? How will you be able to keep your
relationship strong in the days and months ahead?
The answer is
there in our text today as well. “A
threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
Yes you are two that today become one.
But the truth is if two is good, three must be better. You two are not alone in your marriage, for
there is that third strand that binds the two of you together. You see, the God who today joins you together
as one flesh will not abandon you. He
will be with you, caring for you, providing for you, and most importantly
forgiving each of you through the work of Jesus.
So those times
when things seem difficult, those times where your marriage seems to be on the
edge of breaking, Jesus will be there, with comforting and healing. When you feel like you don’t even want to be
around each other, Jesus will be there with you both, forgiving you each.
That strong cord
of Chuck, Brittney, and Jesus cannot be severed. Even when one of you is broken, Christ will
hold strong. Even when things seem there
darkest, Jesus will be there holding together your marriage, as he promises,
until death do you part.
You can trust
these words of God, because Jesus paid the ultimate price. He died that you may be forgiven. He died that you may be loved, and share love
amongst yourselves. He died, and rose
again, and never will die again. He will
be with you, forgiving and strengthening you for the rest of your days.
Today, you two
are joined together. You become one, til
death do you part. And you can be sure,
that all those days to come, Christ will also be with you with forgiveness and
love. For a cord of three cords is not
easily broken, and neither will your marriage be easily broken. God’s blessings to you both! Amen.
